Reader Response Journal Prompt (02/09/2011)
"It was like when the eyes aren't open but try to see." -Sonny (The Flowers, page 2). I'm not sure why, but when I was reading through those simple first two pages this sentence litterally grabbed my attention. I'm not sure if it is because I can relate to it personally or not. But it was as if I could feel my book reaching out to me and little white flags popped up in my mind, alerting me to pay attention to what was happening to our narrator. I could feel almost a gravitational pull to our character. I don't know why, but I felt a much deeper level of connection to our novel as soon as I read that sentence. I'm not sure if I can relate to that sentence on a subconsious level or if I experience that sometimes without realizing it. But as soon as our narrator, Sonny, spoke that sentence, I became much more interested in our book.

I agree that that was a passage that was also a great attention getter. Starting the novel off with a simile like that makes me a bit confused, but at the same time also makes me want to know what he is talking about and what might happen next. I do not know how that could be possible to see with your eyes closed. Being able to do something like that I would think you would be god or a super hero. Or maybe this passage just symbolizes something about Sonny like trust or confidence. I think it might reflect Sonny's struggles in his childhood and a way to overcome them.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you completely KC. I truly believe that the author's use of a similie so close to the begining of the novel is a little confusing because we don't know much about the book and it's characters well yet, but at the same time, his choice of usage and words were also very intriguing!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have to agree with you with thinking that this passage symbolizess something about Sonny. However, what that something is, is yet to be determined. Which, I personally think is a great way to entice the audience into paying closer attention to what that something is. For instance the use of similie here entices me to use my other skills in reading such as predicting what is to come as well as relating to the character.
Over all it's deffietly an interesting start to our required reading novel!
